Friendly AccessSM Infant Mortality Initiative (FAIMI)
The Friendly AccessSM Infant Mortality Initiative (FAIMI) Committee worked towards reducing the racial disparity in infant mortality in Genesee County. This Committee was composed of representatives from all sectors – consumers, community based organizations, social service providers, health systems and hospitals. During a six month planning phase utilizing data on the causes of the African American disparity in infant mortality two primary areas were identified: Maternal Health needs and Infant Health needs. Using this information, the FAIMI Committee developed the African American Family Resource Information Center and Network (AFRICAN) as its intervention. The AFRICAN was not designed to provide direct services. It was instead a link to connect all existing services in the maternal and child health system and also to connect pregnant African American women to those services.
An Operations Committee was developed to oversee the development and implementation of the AFRICAN. This committee was composed of community based organizations, healthcare providers and hospitals.
