Children’s Oral Health Task ForceAn outgrowth of the Coalition’s Friendly Access Project, the Children’s Oral Health Task Force seeks to implement interventions to eliminate the access barriers to children’s dental services.
While the Task Force seeks to assess and describe the current system of children’s dental care (with special emphasis on the population of children ages 0 – 5 years of age) while identifying the barriers to dental services and designing strategies to target such causes, a central activity is oral health education. The Children’s Oral Health Education Campaign focuses on families and caregivers of children ages 0 through 5 years, placing a special emphasis on the population of children at high risk for developing dental caries/tooth decay including those receiving Medicaid insurance coverage. The campaign also seeks to educate providers on children’s oral health issues and utilize them as a vehicle for disseminating the campaign message.
Specific outcome options are:
- To provide outreach and education to families and caregivers of children ages 0 through 5 years at high risk for developing dental caries/tooth decay;
- To increase the percentage of parents and caregivers of children ages 0 through 5 years recognizing the importance of oral health;
- To reduce the severity and number of dental problems in young children;
- To increase providers’ awareness of children’s oral health issues and promote best practices related to prevention.
The Children’s Oral Health Task Force’s Children’s Oral Health Education Wheel, a product of the Baby Those Baby Teeth! Campaign is available in both English and Spanish language versions. To date, over 50,000 wheels have been distributed. Wheels are available for free to providers in Genesee County (while supplies last) and are available for purchase at cost to those providers or organizations outside of Genesee County. To place an order, please complete the Order Form at the bottom of the page and return it via postal mail or email to gfhc@flint.org.
Building on the success of the Children’s Oral Health Education Wheel, the children’s Oral Health Task Force launched a 16-week mass transit campaign in October 2009 promoting proper children’s oral health practices on Mass Transit Authority (MTA) busses. The campaign was made possible with a grant from the Delta Dental Foundation’s Community Mini-Grant Program.
